Had a grey screen and a "need to restart" message

My computer had been left on for a night and when I typed my password this evening my mac (osx 10.6.8 snow leopard) came out of sleep and a transparent grey screen dropped from top to bottom then a message stating that I needed to restart my computer, to hold down the power button till it went off then press it again to start. While this screen was up there was a ticking noise in the background. When my computer restarted another message said that my computer shut down for a problem and asked if I wanted to send a report to apple. I looked at the report and had trouble determining anything other than panic, and Kernel trap. Is my mac out of danger? Was it in danger? Is there anything I should or can do?
