May be some confusion here.
The Motorola Surfboard Gateway modem is sufficient to handle just about anything BUT,
you have to have something to connect it to.
Usually with this modem, you would be connecting it to the cable that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) makes available to you and you would be using the Cable Modem that they supplied.
If you already have cable from your ISP, and you did not mention that you have, then you cannot just connect it to the cable. It does not work like that.
Your ISP will have to configure the modem to work with their receiving end and in my neck of the woods, Comcast will not play that game. Even if you convince them to do so, you will still be paying the monthly modem fee! (Go figure)
Question. Do you already have broadband internet access at your place?
If the answer is yes, then take the modem you purchased back to the store and purchase a Wireless ROUTER.
If the answer is No, then call your local ISP, cable company or the phone company, and arrange for broadband service at your place.
Specify that you want a modem/router with Wireless capabilities. Phone company is more likely to provide that, but you never know if you don't ask.
