All SATA 3 drives I've used work fine on SATA 1 and 2 controllers. What are you reading that made you think there is an issue with that?

For sheer space and speed I would test the drive noted at http://www.anandtech.com/show/5160/seagate-2nd-generation-momentus-xt-750gb-hybrid-hdd-review

Not the Hybrid drive but that 3TB drive at http://www.anandtech.com/show/5160/seagate-2nd-generation-momentus-xt-750gb-hybrid-hdd-review/3

It turns in some great numbers. Now see if you can get it on Amazon.com so you can return it if it fails to work out.

But that drive is pricey so let's look at the next model at http://www.anandtech.com/show/5042/seagates-new-barracuda-3tb-st3000dm001-review

Should be fine. SATA is designed to be backwards compatible. If you buy a SATA3 drive you may only get SATA or SATA II speeds, but it will work, and the cache is purely for the use of the drive's onboard controller.

You shouldn't have a problem here. It should be about as close to plug and play as things get with computers.
