Mac Pro superdrive problem

I have a Mac Pro 2.66g dual core intel running 10.4.11.
I can put a disc into the superdrive, but it is not reading the disc. Can't even hear the disc spinning up. Can't find the driver for it to check it out. I'm afraid this is a hardware issue (not want I really want to hear), but would like to know if there is some way with software to check it out.

Not really. Best thing you can do, is just find like a commercially pressed CD or DVD that is still in very good condition and put it into the drive, see what happens.

Some people have claimed success with lens cleaners and even repairing permissions, but odds are this is a bad drive, since optical drives do go bad pretty often. Good news is, on a Mac Pro you can put in pretty much any IDE optical drive you want, and it'll work just fine, so it doesn't need to be an expensive repair.

After replacing so many drives that I will never reveal just how many, the bottom line is that we keep spares on hand for this issue.

I seem to recall there being an issue of not using a pioneer superdrive causing problems with DVD studio pro. Is that still an issue?
