2007 iMac powers on will not load

I have a 2007 iMac 24" display that powers on and off, but it will not perform the regular software load and boot. The Apple icon appears for a few seconds then the "no symbol" appears for a few seconds then a blank white screen. Anybody have any idea what the problem is and is it fixable or do I need to take it into Apple?

This is often a sign of the OS install having become hosed.

First try booting off the OS install DVD and then after the language selection screen, go to the Utility menu and select Disk Utility. Run a repair disk and repair permissions, and hope that fixes it. It probably won't, but it's worth a shot.

The next step is reinstalling the OS, and if that doesn't work, you're looking at having to get some bad hardware replaced.
