Hi,

I have a pretty thick black line on the left side of my screen, what could be the cause of this? I've only had this iMac for about a year.

Without a picture to go by, it's hard to say, but it sounds like a display failure. So if you've only had it "about a year" I would be calling Apple immediately to find out the warranty status. If there's any warranty left, get that thing in for repair ASAP.

That too... If it's just barely outside of warranty, there's a decent chance someone will give you a CS Code, which is kind of a special exception to the warranty. It's certainly no guarantee, but the longer you wait the lower the odds become.
