intel imac will not sleep or shut down

I have an Intel Imac G5 2.66 gHz 2 core duo running 10.6.3. I am unable to get it shut down or sleep. Choosing either results in the display blacking out, the fans run for about 1 second and then everything come back on as if nothing has happened. I've reset the Pram and Vram, disconnected all USB and Firewire devices, tried it with and without file sharing and Airport operating. A 'hard' shutdown with the power button works fine. I have checked for any firmware updates but mine is fine. This happened once before and clearing out some files from deleted apps cured the problem but it's back now. Any ideas please?

zapping the PRAM and VRAM did nothing for you, it's probably time to consider an Archive and Install of the OS.

All you need is your 10.6 installation disk, boot from it and go from there.

Archive and Install (preserve user settings) is the default install for SL and will keep your other data intact

No peace for the Intel iMac

Just FYI, because you're going to likely confuse people and slow your responses to issues.

The G5 was the old PowerPC processor which preceded the switch to Intel chips. So you can't have an iMac G5 with a Core 2 Duo, because they would be two different CPUs. AFAIK, Apple hasn't done dual CPUs since they made the switch to PowerPC from the M68K back in the late 80s. It also DRAMATICALLY changes the troubleshooting a person does depending on if you have a PPC or Intel Mac.

And about your problem... Do you happen to know the specific model refresh you have?

Shut down sleep problem

Hi. It's a iMac, Model 8,1 Intel Core 2 Duo. 2.66 GHz with 2 Gig RAM. I've not done a system re install because I'm sure there is a corrupt file that can be corrected but if the worst comes to the worst it'll have to be a archive and install after all.
