It's surely analog because it's a 3.5 mm circular jack. And I use a MAC Pro Intel tower, and am plugging it into the audio in portal in back. And when I insert and pull out the jack from portal, a sound registers in sound> input, in system preferences. But no sound through the mike registers.

Most headset microphones require a 'mic in' port and not a 'line in'. Basically Line level is way lower than mic level so you need power to the mic to boost the level. This is usually provided by a battery or phantom power. On a PC, the headsets will work as the input port is mic level, but Apple chose to have line in because it has more connectivity options (minidisks, MP3 players, etc).
One way around this problem is to find a powered mic or, spring for a USB mic/headset and plug it into any USB port.
Logitech make some decent, and fairly cheap, ones.
