Firmware update incomplete - now no video!

A friend brought me their flat panel iMac after a firmware update went wrong. They said the instructions were to hold down the power button until the status bar appeared, which they said they did. But now the iMac displays absolutely no video.
I can hear the startup chime, I can hear the hard drive churning along like a champ, but absolutely no video! I tried rebooting the iMac with an original Leopard disk - nothing. I'm now in the process of reinstalling Leopard via target disk mode but something tells me that isn't going to solve the problem either! Because as strange as it seems there was no video in target disk mode either. Just a black screen and the white light to tell me the unit is powered on.
My questions:
1) Is it possible to fix this firmware update?
2) Can the firmware be overwritten or rolled back?
3) Can any of this be done via target disk mode?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
