networking a printer from laptop to desktop

I own a Netgear router/dsl I use to connect to my laptop running windows 7. My desktop runs XP and has a usb Canon Printer hooked to it.

Can I network the two pc's and use the desktop as the 'server' in order to share the printer?

Yes, that's possible. You first "share" the printer on the desktop, then "add" it as a shared printer to your desktop using the normal 'add printer' wizard.

Google XP PRINTER SHARING as a start, if http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/xp-to-windows-7-printer-sharing/ isn't sufficient.
It's not too difficult, but it's easy to go wrong in some detail of some step.
