how can i run laptopwifi to destop via cord

I have a laptop that uses a built in Wifi card to connect to my router and this can connect to the internet, and I was wondering if I could somehow access the internet on my desktop PC via my laptop.

I'm hoping for a not-so-complex solution as this will only be set up for a few days, but it is quite vital that my desktop computer gets internet access.

desktop:dell demetion 8400 win 7 32 bit
Laptop: compaq presario v4000 Winxp 32 bit

Clarification request: What ports do the two machines have in common?

There is Windows ICS but it's a bit quirky. I'm thinking, however, that your router should have wired ports. If your desktop has an Ethernet port, that would seem to be the easiest and best choice.

Thank you I was able to run an Ethernet cord from my laptop to my desktop and it worked without a hitch
Sorry I should have stated that my router is three rooms aways from the desktop and nether could have been moved from there original positions to avoid wifi disruption

There are several programs out there, that will turn your laptop into a virtual router, quite literally. Some are free, some aren't. The one I like is Virtual WiFi Router for two main reasons: it's free and it's the only free one I've found, so far, that will use a 3G/4G broadband modem as a WiFi source. The paid programs cost way too much for something that should be free in the first place. I use Virtual WiFi Router to broadcast a password-protected WiFi signal from my laptop that I can then pick up on my iPad, so I can access the Internet to download apps, for example. It's extremely easy to use and configure. Hope this helps or at least gives you another option.
