password not working

How can I do a backup if the password is not working to get into Windows? This happened after allowing a Norton tech support person take control to fix something regarding Norton. Now it seems that I have to reformat and reinstall but want to backup some things first. Thanks.

I forgot to say that this involves an HP Pavillion 9000 series with a Windows Vista operating system.

How I do this.

I boot up my free NTPASSWD CD (see google) and in less than 5 minutes can reset the Administrator password.

After that I can login to the Administrator account and use the old Windows methods to reset other account passwords.

About a 5 minute task. Why not get it done?
