Hide OSX files?

I remember the old days of Windows being able to right click on a file, picture, etc... changing the options to make it hidden, and then "Hiding hidden folders." Is this possible to due in OSX Lion?

But since I can always open up a terminal and use "ls" with options to show it, then nothing is truly hidden.

Can you reveal why this is needed? Maybe someone has another solution or angle?
