How to forum: What to do with my old laptops?

Even a dead laptop is worth 99 bucks for someone to scavenge some shell or other part. The only downside is personal information. Frankly, wipe the drive so it's not an issue and sell them with Linux installed if you want to get a few bucks.

I agree with Robert on the re-sale and wipe clean the HD. I suggest you google for KILLDISK or DBAN hard drive wipers or remove HD. You can install some Linux version or retain the original OS, by re-installing and/or providing the s/w bundle that came with the laptop. You can also give these away to Goodwill or any local organization that may make re-use or claim some credit for recycling efforts. Locally here, the county provides a day to recycle any electronics for recycle, repair/re-use for those less fortunate. Besides preventing outright dumping or trash, these get proper handling and if possible given to those in need or provide experience on electronics, maybe shipped overseas to somewhere in need.

I donated my last two to a small school district for local farm families and their children's use. They took them like they were made of GOLD! My brother and sister-in-law pointed to me the need, and I made their local paper for the 7+ year old laptops I gave the school. And it is a donation so I could claim on my taxes!

Why not wipe out the hard drive and donate it to a recycle clinic? I like to volunteer at http://www.macrecycleclinic.org/site/ location in Silver Spring, MD. We take machines that don't work well and rebuild them for donation to school kids who can't afford computers or people trying to develop computer skills so they can get a job.

Please don't send a working laptop to the landfill. It is a waste of resources and even an old computer is a treasure to somebody who is starting off with nothing.

Even a broken laptop may provide the parts to get another machine up and running for someone.

It is not difficult to resale it.

take the hard drive out and brake it because im sure you have classified info on it
and info can always be recovered even if you reformat a hard drive

and then chuck the old laptops in the trash unless you like collecting trash

ps you could sell iot for parts but its time consuming and i highly doubt people are looking for these parts that are regularly available in stores for cheaper then your willing tio give it away for
