One big clue when this happens again is to see under the MS update section if any were done on that date of the change. If so, then consider it returns to a more basic XP setting when all is said and done. XP can be problematic as it gets things done in an ad-hoc way since time has passed it by in order to be current. Alas Media Center is NOT heavily supported and it maybe being treated more as std. XP as an entity more than anything else, IMHO.

I have seen similar and here's what I did

If I'd set the PC to autologin to my user account, this might happen. If I used the classic login and waited just a time for some background apps and services to load before signing on, it would come back to my desired desktop every time. My custom desktop, BTW, was just the classic view set to performance rather than appearance. I cannot explain why this would happen but suspect it had to do with the loading sequence during startup.

I remember that I set the PC to auto Login awhile back, so that, plus MS Updates is probably the cause.
