I have a sata hard drive from my desktop,I would like to connect it to my laptop using the esata port on the side. I thought I could do this using the sata cable from the desktop. Is this possible ?

You need a an adapter or an ext. case which to mount the HD that provides esata connection. Use the link below for some quick checks:

I suggest you get an ext. case that is normally USB type but also provides esata connection as well for flexibility. SATA and eSATA are slightly different physically but not "'signal" status.
