E-Mail problem

A friend has sent me some jpeg images, but when I receive them come up as a text file on notepad.
What might be the problem and what ,if anything, can be done. Is there a way to convert them back to jpeg?
What i am using for e-mail is Outlook Express.

Usually no need to convert.

This is usually the loss or lost File Association to that file type.

You didn't supply which OS but I suggest you install IRFANVIEW and let it associate with images.

Tried irfanview, but it will only show one of several pictures and it is so small as to be useless

Given the detail so far, sounds like progress and I have no reason to think the pictures are very big.
