Old Computer crashed, I want to transfer data to new compute

I understand there are devices that attach to a hard drive, removed from an old computer, and via USB connection, will transfer data to new computer. I can not find name of this device or who sells it locally in Southern Calif.

Such a device is called USB to SATA/IDE cable. Any computer shop can supply it.

The alternative is to boot from a Linux Live disk (free) on that crashed PC and copy your files to an external hard disk. But it depends on the cause of the crash if that will work.

I have a couple and they work very well. You just have to be sure you are using a SATA disk and not an IDE disk.

There is a BIG difference in the connectors

If your drive has a row of pins and a four pin power connector, it's IDE
