How to transfer recorded shows from a DirecTV cable box?

I have a DirecTV cable box with 200hrs of recording space. I have some great recordings on it I'd like to preserve but I don't know how to transfer them to my laptop or external harddrive. Can anyone help please? The cable inputs/outputs at the cable box are RCA type. There is one S-video Out jack, a USB port and a Digital Audio Out. What do I need?

What output to use depends on the inputs of your recording device.

I want to transfer to my Dell Studio 64 bit Windows Vista laptop which has an HDMI inlet or UBS ports and an RCA-type but 1/8th inch diameter inlets. Thanks for helping.

The above are RCA plugs, they are a Standard size.

Are you sure you are not confusing the inlets with a 3.5mm mini-jack inlet?
(3.5mm is 1/8th inch)

Are you also sure that your laptop has an HDMI Input? That model of laptop only has HDMI Output.
The 1/8th inch holes are for Audio, hence the two icons you see on them.

Bottom line here, your laptop does not have the capability of taking in video without the addition of a digital bridge and suitable software.

Thanks for your help. It is much appreciated. You are right! Sorry to confuse the issue. They are 3.5mm mini jacks. I was unaware the HDMI was OUT only! So what is the digital bridge and the related software that would be required for transferring material from the TVR to the laptop? And where can they be acquired? The laptop has something like an S Video inlet but it seems to be a bit bigger. It has a symbol that looks like a screen between two straight vertical lines, that is: a vertical line on either side of a rectangle. The inlet has 15 pin holes.

None of those ports that you describe are INLET ports,

they are ALL outlets.

You have NO video inputs on that laptop

Google Pinnacle Dazzle for digital bridges. They usually come with Software.

You will need the USB version
