Avoid Torrents and pirate sites.
This is a subject I have spent considerable time on, as I am a school teacher and our classroom does not have Internet, which would keep me from sharing some of the great content that is online with the kids. First, as I said, stay away from anything mentioning torrents. A torrent program is two-way, you're downloading while uploading to others at the same time. Torrent programs are inherently risky because of the access level they need to your system to function. There is nothing inherently "insidious" about this, it's just the way they work.
I have tried a lot of various programs over the past few years, and about the best one I have found so far is called FoxReal You-Tube FLV Downloader. There are two versions of the program, a free version and a registered version. Even though it says that it is a YouTube downloader, it works on many other sites as well. The only difference between the two versions is that the registered version can convert the files it records to other formats. Aside from that, the free version is fully functional. If you don't have money for the registered version, a program called Format Factory (freeware) can convert just about any format to any other format of audio, video, and many more. You may wish to give these two programs a try, as it worked very well for me.There are hundreds of such programs on the 'Net. <div>
One final note, as I said in the subject line, stay away from the pirate sites! To download files from them is very risky. I personally know of situation where someone downloaded a copy of the Cinderella movie from a pirate site, and shortly afterward was contacted with legal threats from Disney Entertainment threatening legal actions and fines in the many thousands of dollars. Disney had tracked the download from the site, through the person's Internet provider, and finally to the account that was used to download.
And no, I did not make this up.. There are countless thousands of movies out there available for free, especially the older ones and old TV shows. It's just not worth the risk trying to save a few bucks on a movie.
Here are a few reference the links that you may wish to check out:
