Where should we set up our wireless router?

We are thinking of setting up the wireless router for our cable internet in the basement to limit cords running through the house, but my recollection is that it is best when located in the middle of the house. I have a small two story house, and we want to access the internet from all three levels of the house, and the backyard. We need to purchase a new router, so if a more powerful router would make the basement workable, that would be fine, but I'm not sure what specs I need to look for. Any information would be great - thanks!

2. There are no "more powerful" routers. Power is limited by the FCC.

3. Centrally located.

4. While answer 3 is the norm I tend to place my router a little closer to where the clients are located.

5. Here's the big secret to great WiFi -> Keep anything that can be wired, wired.

Basement-Bad idea.As the walls,and any other obsticles in the way would reduce/block the signal.Ideally you should set it somewhere as close to the center of the house as possible.While there will still be doors,glass,walls etc.. that will factor in the strength of the signal you recieve,you could also purchase a set of larger gain antenaes for the router.I know you can buy larger ones from Linksys.You would also want to position the antenaes to where you get the best signal(work with them) with a laptop close at hand until you get the best responce.
Specs-need a little more info as i do not know if your wireless cards are N,or G or both.My opinion,Linksys is the best.As for more powerful,they are all really about the same (there is no more powerful unit from the next) they all use a signal to communicate.The less obstacles you have in the way it will perform the best.
