AVG forum: AVG creating bootable USB drive

Yes I have got 3 laptops ( 6 months old) , all of them are USB bootable

What procedure are you talking about it !!!!
It seems to me you didn't understand what was the question from the first place

The README on the download makes no mention of the makeboot file.

It appears you only have to read the README to get this done but I understand folk don't like to read those things. I'll copy the current README here.

Note that bootable USB drive can be also created directly within the booted
AVG Rescue CD GNU/Linux.

Bootable USB drive can be created using the setup.exe file on Windows or setup.sh
on GNU/Linux operating system.

During the USB installation no files already stored on the USB drive are deleted
or modified, except AVG Rescue CD GNU/Linux files. So you do not need to do any
backup.

AVG Rescue CD GNU/Linux USB requires about 510MB free space on the USB drive.

Using setup.exe on Windows
---------------

1. Unpack the rar or zip archive to your preferred location.
2. Run setup.exe which will guide you through the whole process. You will be
able to select a USB drive from a list-box and setup will copy all necessary
files to the selected USB drive and it will make the USB drive bootable. The
setup will also take care of rights elevation, since creating the bootable USB
drive requires administrator privileges.

Using setup.sh on GNU/Linux

1. You need to have dialog library installed.
2. Unpack the rar or zip archive to your preferred location.
3. Run setup.sh as root and it will guide you through the whole process. You will
be able to select a USB drive from a list-box and size of created persistent
ext2 file system stored on usb flash disk. Setup will copy all necessary files
to the selected USB drive and it will make the USB drive bootable."

To create a USB flash drive variant of AVG Rescue CD, you will need to do the following:
1- Extract the archive downloaded from AVG web directly on the removable USB flash drive. It has to be extracted in the root folder of the disk - do not use a subfolder.
2- Run the extracted makeboot.bat batch file. When started it will overwrite the boot record. Make sure you are using the desired USB flash drive, otherwise it can make your Windows un-bootable!
3- In the opened window press any key to prepare the USB flash drive.
4- After this process is finished (message will be displayed) you can close the window.

The method that you referred to it , is creating a bootable USB from AVG rescue CD on windows platform and Linux platform.
And I don't have AVG rescue CD from the first place, therefore this method is not workable for me

Doesn't use it either. Seems to work.

Maybe you downloaded the USB version and are using the instruction for the CD version? I can't tell but my bet is you may want to try the USB version and the instruction that came with it.

It seems that some of the AVG Rescue CD FAQ articles and web instructions are obsolete. I have passed the information to responsible people to have these corrected.

How to create the AVG Rescue USB then?
1. Download and extract the current AVG Rescue CD package for USB stick.
2. Plug in an USB flash drive you'd like to use.
3. Run the extracted setup.exe file.
4. Select your USB drive from the drop down list and finish the installation.
You can use the USB drive to boot your system then.

How can I do that and I quoted the USB instruction from AVG website

This is what I tried implicitly to tell Bob, although I couldn't find a direct contact email on that link to report that to AVG.

Sorry but I was being dense here. Sorry about that.

It's because for years (2+ decades) I've always had to check any README that came with a download. It trumps the other instructions.
