Intrusive Background Activity - a problem with AVG 9?

This is a Packard Bell Notebook S4 running Windows XP with SP3. I have upgraded to AVG 9. The scan optimisation process has been completed. Since the upgrade, I have experienced continual low-level background activity even when the computer is idle after the initial boot sequence is complete, indicated by the hard disk light flashing. Task Manager shows CPU usgae is most of the time around 2-4% and this is not a problem. However, at regular intervals of about 30 seconds, CPU usage bursts to around 25%. This is not always a problem but when the computer is busy, for example while watching streaming video, these bursts intrude into the activity, with a continual, irritating effect on performance. Task Manager shows all of this as System Idle Process and none of the other processes indicates any activity at these times. The CPU usage graph consistently records the bursts as brief peaks to about 25% every 5 units on the x axis (ie about 30 second intervals).
This may not, of course, be caused by the AVG upgrade, but the effect was not present before so it does seem the likely culprit.
I would be grateful for any advice.
