I used paint then sanded to smooth it out. It's like fine body work and all the caveats about dust control and more apply but in the end it was OK.

You painted and then sanded?
Was it spray paint? What kind of paint works best?

The last time I did this I put the laptop into a plastic bag then cut away the area I was doing the work on then used painter's tape to seal it up with just the part I was working on exposed.
I used a plastic spray paint from either a model shop or Krylon's offering and the sand paper was in the high 100 count. 180 or higher if I recall. So a few days of spray, dry, sand and my patience was rewarded as it was filled in and I could use a sticker to cover up the ding.

Rubber it is as it is more protective 
It is anti shock and anti harm as well
