Portable webcam for visually impaired child

Hi Everyone,
I am a mom looking toward you tech saavy people to help me because by the time technology hits the disability arena, it is "old". I am looking for a portable webcam type application. Here is some background. We have an adopted daughter who is visually impaired (legally blind) and in regular school classrooms. She uses a laptop to type and her best vision is within 10inches. She uses a bulky CCTV (like a webcam with monitor)to see the board which is OK when you stay in one classroom but in higher grades you move around. I want her to be as independent and not rely upon others to move equipment. Anybody know of a webcam (or someother setup) that a 5th grader can stick in her backpack and carry to each class , plug into a laptop and have good enough resolution to see an overhead or board from her laptop monitor if she is sitting in the front row? I have been the one having to bring technology into the school. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. Any creative ideas to set this kid up for success?
