HP DM1z netbook won't start

Hi everyone, my issue is that a couple of days ago I was working on my netbook under a newly installed operating system. The OS was Joli OS. Upon getting used to the new system I decided to press the web browser button next to the power button and all of a sudden the netbook powered off. I haven't been able to get it to turn back on since. I have tried a hard reset but to no avail, the led attached to the power jack will light up and blinks when I press the power button but nothing else happens. No other lights except the power button, no fans come on either. I suspect it is a major issue like the motherboard but am curious to know if anyone else has any advice for a student with a broken computer. (aside from buy a new one. happy )

I'd try booting from a flash drive to see if that will work. You can make a bootable Ubuntu flash drive and try to boot from it. I suspect that in playing around with Joli OS, you somehow inadvertently wiped out something on the hard drive and your motherboard is OK. Any flash drive should work as long as it will hold 2 GB or more. If you can boot from the flash drive, you should contact your netbook's manufacturer to get the media needed to restore it to factory settings.

There is a bug in many that never was cured but the workaround is pretty simple. Remove power, unplug the AC then press and hold the power button for 60 seconds. Slip in the battery (a good one, don't slip in those 15 minute or less batteries) apply AC and try again.

If this fails it's some other hardware issue.
