Laptop won't shut down and BSoD?

Howdy,
I've been having a problem with my laptop for quite some time now. Owning an ASUS N53S, the laptop from time to time has trouble shutting down, resulting in me having to hold down the power button to shut it off. When I selected the shut down option from the start menu it will log off, but just hangs on the "Shutting Down" screen.
I've also had a fair few BSoD's which just happen randomly, the computer starts to freeze up, won't open any programs before this happens.
Can anyone offer me any help regarding this issue?

I see no story about the virus or other issues.

Does the factory restore work to correct this? (This is a question and not something to try unless you are sure your files are backed up.)

It has been doing this since purchase.
What other details do you need? I doubt it would have anything to do with specs as it is running 16GB of ram and a 2670WM i7 processor.
I have not tried a factory restore, nor have i backed up my files as i haven't had the laptop for very long. Plant to do so soon

I have no reason to note any of the common causes given no story. It could be the old Norton issue or other.
