Same Specs, Different Names...

Keeping all significant specs the same, namely,

processor speed/generation/make
physical memory capacity/speed
graphics card speed/memory
secondary memory/speed
video screen size/resolution

does the performance of an alienware differ from any other laptop? <forget about overheating and battery life. im assuming these things are too random>
gaming brands cost as much as 300 dollars more than non gaming brands, like asus and hp.

Dell could do a better job integrating the unit (or worse) so how would you know if the memory speed was actually used without benchmarks you find in reviews?

The difference between gaming machines

and non gaming machines are the components for gaming machines are more powerfull. The Asus, HP of the world that are sold at Best Buy and Newegg are basically as is and non configureable. It used to be that the best gaming machines were the Alienware's (Before Dell), Prostar, Sager, Eurocomm and Vodoo (HP purchased). These machines were manufactured by the Quanta, Compal, Clevo, Wistron, Asus and MSI to name a few. In the past few years MSI and Asus have released gaming machines and non gaming machines under their own brand. Some of them still allow you to configure their laptops with desktop processors.

Mostly in laptops you get what you pay for. The deals are had when the components get old and system with newer components is released.
