Alienware laptop often runs some games very slowly

My laptop often runs some games to slowly to be playable, but never has any trouble with others. If it works for one of the games that I have issues with, it will continue to work until I shut the computer down, or it goes into sleep mode for over an hour or so. Then when I turn the computer back on, they don't work anymore. And then a few days later they will work for a day or two, and then stop again.

What has me really confused is how some games will always work (Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2, New Vegas, Alpha Protocol and Oblivion), and some don't (Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 1, Witcher 2, and Skyrim). Changing graphics settings makes almost no difference at all, and I easily meet the requirements for all of them anyway.

Does anyone have a suggestion about what may be causing this?

On a side note, both Dragon Age games always start up slow, and after about 15 min, DAO always runs fine, and DA2 sometimes does.

I head to the forums that the game's maker hosts. That's where folk post fixes, workarounds and settings to try.
