I've been searching for a gaming laptop lately. I've never owned a gaming laptop because I have a PS3 but I want to get into gaming on the PC. I was going to buy an alienware M17x R3 and upgrade the graphics and RAM but it would stretch my budget quite a bit(Trying to spend 1000-1500). I was looking for a less costly laptop and I found the MSI GT683R-242US. It seems to be a great laptop and it's not too expensive. Since it has 1 TB hard drive, lots of RAM, etc. I thought it would be much more popular than the M17x for gaming but it isn't. I am worried if I buy the MSI it won't play games I like (just cause 2, BF3, TES:Skyrim, WoW, etc.) as well as the M17 R3. Could someone explain how well the M17 would run new games like Battlefield 3 compared to the M17 R3 and which I should buy if not some other laptop I haven't heard of. Thanks a bunch in advance and sorry for the lengthly post!

Yes that will play games but all the prior comments about thigh burns, heat, lifespan and more still apply.

What prior comments? All of the reviews on Newegg say that the cooling Is fine except for one. No one has said anything about lifespan.. Where did you find that? I'd like to know more about the question how well would it run new games.

Quad core i7 machines with great GPUs are too hot of lap use and so far I'm not finding gamer laptops to get past year 2 without repairs.
Gamers accept this and we always hope the next generation will fair better.
This model has the current (better) i7 but again, every model I could lay my hands on resulted in hot air and surfaces when a current game was running. We still have to temper our expectations and call these desktop replacements and keep in mind those cooling pads are a great addition.

Okay I will keep this in mind, thank you very much. How well do you think this laptop would play these games: Black Ops, Minecraft, WoW and BF3 or BFBC2. I hope you will be able to answer these questions, thanks.

You have the latest i7, you have far from the low end GPU. You could see if notebookcheck.com has benchmarks but everything looks great for a gaming laptop.
Remember that folk are something chafed later that someone didn't warn them about gaming laptops so if you check, all my replies (hopefully all) always write something to warn folk that these are different.
