Building a gaming laptop

I know a local computer guy who is trustworthy and knowledgeable. He claims to be able to build a laptop that equals the performance of an Alienware M17x. (He runs his own computer store).
The problem is this: He doesn't seem to know much about Nvidia mobile graphics chips such as the GeForce 260M or 130M. He keeps talking about the 9000 series graphics by Nvidia.
My question is this: Can you put an actual graphics card into a laptop if your building one? Also, is there a 9000 series graphics chip?
Please help clarify.
