I am getting paralyzed with the possibilities
g-mat---> I think the iPad is cool. However, I also have read (much of it on CNet) about it's many shortcomings (not that powerful, dies in direct sunlight, no folder structure, VERY proprietary, etc.).

1. Don't know where the power issue came from. Haven't heard a thing about that.
2. Haven't heard about an issue with direct sunlight either. Except that it's easier to read indoors.
3. OS 4.0 which is in final beta2 right now, and released at the top of next month has folders. All the apps you can eat baby.
4. Yes, Mac is very proprietary. Apple is a manufacturer. Would you buy Ford parts for a Pontiac?
5. What is etc?

g-mat---> I wonder if I should hold out for other options? Before the iPad, I really wanted a Netbook (either option would be for a second, walk around computer) but now it seems those will be phased out soon in favor of newer ideas. I am getting paralyzed with the possibilities. Anyone have insight into what's next and when to expect it? Are there any Win 7 tablets coming out soon? I saw HP has one.

Waiting for the next iPad release could prove to be a worthy stay.
What to expect next is already previewed in the "iPhoneHD revealed" stories all over the interweb.
Front and rear facing cam (video conferencing) will prolly be the big change. With a noise canceling mike, better screen, HD video, HDMI out, 4G, more ram, longer battery life and some bug fixes as well as aesthetic changes. I'm waiting myself. And I'm a Mac fanatic.
But I'm waiting for iPad2. Not an HP. Or any other Windoze clone.
