Which kindle to purchase for reading e-mail and browsing web

Instead of carrying my netbook with me, I want something smaller to read e-mail and browse the web. When I look at different products, I am confused by the wording. I don't want monthly fees and want free hotspots, not just AT&T hotspots. A basic kindle is affordable, but don't know if this does the job.

What is a basic Kindle?

The Kindle Fire is a basic reader with a fair web browser. Not perfect but can get to most sites and works with most hotspots.
