Nook vs. Kindle - Kids(students) vs. Wife

I started reserching ereaders tonight as a Xmas gift for wife. She reads latest best sellers so I was leaning towards Kindle.
But after reading comments throughout site, I started thinking about my daughters who are students. One is in college so I was wondering if colleges have jumped on the bandwagon with textbooks being available. That would be great but I would be surprised if they do.
Why does Kindle have a public libary issue? Is it just a matter of some licensing fee? I read about some ways around it with downloads but do they work easily?
Then I wondered if the kids even need ereaders for all this. Can they just download onto our home computer?
It is getting late and will research some more tommorrow, but thought any answers I can get wil help save some time.
