External graphics cards?

My current PC is pretty much out-dated, so i'm planning on getting a new laptop. Anyways, i've done my homework, and know what kind of laptop i'm looking for, but i was wondering, are there externally attachable high-end graphics cards? I couldn't get many answers searching on google...so i suppose that there aren't too many yet, however i have seen some vague information. I would buy a PC instead, but i'm going to university soon, and probably in another country, so i'd like to buy a laptop instead. So, i'd greatly appreciate it if anyone has information on "high-end externally attachable graphics cards for laptops" i'd be in their debt. Thanks in advance!

The problem is the bandwidth.

While you can get very good displays with great color the speed is a little low. This is good for a second monitor to extend your photoshop or other work but you didn't define HIGH END. It's certainly possible to get more pixels and color, but no speed.

Gaming laptops are possible but most folk get a little shocked about the cost and reduced life span.
