Available versus Installed RAM

I have a Dell Latitude D620 Laptop. I upgraded from 2GB to 4GB of RAM. I installed Crucial RAM based on advice received from Mr. Profitt. The system now shows 4096MB of RAM installed but only 3063MB available. Why would there be such a dramatic difference in available versus installed RAM? Would this be related to my laptop or could there be an issue with the RAM itself? If it is related to my laptop, what could I do to improve the amount of RAM available?

on weather your running a 32 bit operating system or a 64 bit operating system. If you use a 64 bit you can use all of the 4 gigs of RAM , if it's a 32 bit system , you only get to use 3.50 gigs.........Digger

That's caused by many factors.

1. A 32-bit OS.
2. Some RAM is used by the onboard Video.

This question has prior discussions so there may be other reasons.
