setup with the SSD is the OS will be installed on the SSD which will result in 2 to 5 times faster booting of the device. The benefits of an SSD drive are the read times are WAY WAY faster then your typical HD and write times don't have as big a difference. The cons is the tecnology is newer and less battle tested. But if it's any indicator the new Macair book is coming out with no optical drive and no hard drive. It's going SSD only. A SSD drive has no moving parts so it doesn't cause as much heat and takes less power so it helps with batter life. If upgrading to a SSD the older laptops have SATA II and some of the newer SSD's are compatible with SATA III but they will work with SATA II just you won't get the speed advantage of SATA III over SATA II.
