Blank screen on laptop. Not working on external monitor.

I bought a used Dell Inspiron 5150 for spare parts. Well it came with everything, but was told the video was not working(No image on the screen) It powers up, fan turns on and about 10seconds later the fan will turn off. The "Power" light will still be on, as well as the computer(Have to push the power button to shut it down)

So I figured might as well try to fix it.

I hooked it up to an external monitor. No picture. Swapped the ram to see if that was the issue. It was not. Took it apart and swapped the graphics card for a known working one. Didn't solve the problem.

Is the motherboard possibly gone? Or what else can I try?

Did you try another motherboard? (no, there is no cheaper diagnostic than that.)

No, I didn't try another motherboard. I'm not a computer guy, so was just wondering if there was other options out there.

I'd try the old generic reset. It's at the top of this forum in the sticky post.

I found it doing a google search. I did it 3 times. Powers up(With just AC plugged in), screen is still blank, and fan shuts off.

Well after ripping both my laptops apart, I fixed the problem. Someone took the laptop apart before, and when they took the CPU/heatsink out they forgot to lock it back in place(Has a locking screw). Everying works, and found out it has a higher res. and is a HT model cool
