Laptop HD will not boot (New out of the box)

I have a HP G60 Laptop. Just removed from box and I get an error msg "#10008 - replace HD". Called HP and will not honor since out of warranty. Yes, believe it or not, they didn't believe that this was just taken out of box 2 years after purchase(don't ask why why it was not opened for 2 years after purchase). I am going to price out a new HD. If I buy one, what software do I need to be able to use it on this laptop (or what do I need to do). Never had the opportunity to create any recovery disks. Thnaks for your help.
