Laptop HDD Upgrade

Recently installed new HDD in laptop. Would now like to copy files and settings from old HDD which is now in a sata casing. O/S on both drives is Vista. Can I do this without having to purchase some costly software?

Just drag and drop in Explorer. If you get an 'access denied' error message, google VISTA TAKE OWNERSHIP and do what the hits say to take ownership.

You'll have to manually redo your settings. But that is much less work than retyping all your documents and retaking all your pictures.

If youn just replaced with a bigger drive and want the new to to be the same as the old one then you need to image the old one. Software to do that isn't expensive and it's good to have. Files and data can be copied from drive to drive but applications need to be installed. I used Acronis Tru Image when I added an SSD to my laptop. I purchase a kit that came with the SSD drive and the software came with it. Acronis is $50.00 and works drive to drive. It copies all files, data and applications.
