I have a Vista Home Premium OS SP2, 32 bit, Intel core2 @ 1.66 GHz, 2 Gb RAM, 100 Gb hard drive.
It has become very slow. I have removed all (or most) of the data but retained important programs the most important being MS Office Standard 2007.
I am looking to improve the performance. Contemplating upgrading the RAM to 2 x 2Gb = 4Gb (which I am confident I can do), also replace the drive with 256Gb SSD and upgrade/replace the OS with Win 7.
Should I consider 64 bit OS?
If so, how best to proceed?
If I stick with 32 bit, I presume I can reinstall Office 2007 with the original disc and key.
The currently installed drive fails PC-Doctor Targeted read test, SMART short self test (recommends replace drive), and Surface Scan test 2.
Any advice gratefully accepted.

The worst system I had was Vista 64 bit. It's almost evil as it combines Vista with more security.

Microsoft did an about face with Windows 7 32 and 64 bit but your upgrade may depend on the maker supplying drivers and those other helper apps (like the one that turns on the wifi?)


For MUCH LESS MONEY and more bang for the buck look at the RAM you listed and then check out the 500GB Seagate HYBRID drive for 99 bucks.

will be real cheap but the 256 GB SSD will cost around 400 at least. I would stay with 32 bit unless your you have the retail version and it came with both 32 and 64 bit. If to want to add the drive and upgrade OS plus add memory your up to the price of a new i5 processor laptop.
