Old Dell inspiron 8500, loaded Ubuntu 10.04 graphic problems

Running a GeForce 4200 Go 64, with what Ubuntu said is the latest drivers. I can't tell if I have a hardware or software problem. Some time after loading I can touch the mouse pad or push on the lower part of the computer and the screen flashes and gets fuzzy and locks up the computer. Other times it will load and run for a while before if locks up, only way out is to use the power off button, can not get to a terminal screen? I think it could be the card overheating or a bad driver, running a 3D driver on an VGA card I don't think is good??

This is a YEARLY TASK for both laptops and desktops. But makers tend to not tell you and the machines are the worse for it.

Hi Par-man,

I resurrected my old Dell Inspiron 8500 recently and ran Ubuntu 10.04 for some time. Recently moved on to 12.04. I also had graphics problems that were solved with the proprietary driver- however ubuntu always ran a little buggy. Fresh install worked fine but over time started to have problems with crashes or force closing Libre Office. Were you able to find out what the problem is? I also wondered if it was the graphics driver so I'm using 12.04 without the driver for some time to see if it develops any crashes. I may upgrade my RAM. Please let me know if you found a way to make it work, my IT office said if it is still unstable I will have to go back to XP (noooo!).

I happen to have a pair of Compaq r3000's

With an all too similar 64MB Geforce and as long as we don't do anything like a game or graphics intensive, these do work. There is no real cure for this old gear except to replace the laptop.
