Laptop hardware component & upgrades forum: Acer Aspire 5515 Processor Upgrade???

I was doing a little research and came up with zip on what motherboard this laptop runs. So... I did what any other overclocking nut would do... Piece it together and let it fly. I am happy to annonce that I am running a 5050e AMD in my Aspire 5515.
2.6 x 2 at 64 bits.
The processor runs @ 45 watts and I have had it maxxed for over an hour (100% usage) on the stock cooler with no issues. The socket is a am2 socket with all the trimmings.. I updated the ram to 4gig (system max) and I am runnign the beta of windows 7.
Its not high end... but its isn't your typical 350 dollar lappy either....


I have seen the "can I update the processor" question on many forums and question sites. No answers.... So after this success I hit the top result from google (which was this forum)... registered and posted...

yep, same here. upgraded to 4 gigs ram and a 5050e amd 2.6 x2 64bit. great cheap laptop. and with Linux I don't even see much of a battery drain when its scaled during normal usage.

i have no choice coz no 'e' version of this cpu can be found
in my part of the world. so instead i got a 65Watter 5200+
which overheats instantly upon loading but thanks to RMClock i managed to
run it at 1.2V lower and the heat hovers around 56-72celcius.

I upgraded the ram to the full 4 gigs worked fine
Then last night I installed a AMD 4450B X2 Processor (2.3 Ghz) 45W Socket AM2
of course using cpu thermal paste a small amount evenly spread.
As far as the cpu install not to trickery remove the large cover on the back and then the four screws that hold in the cpu heat trap the the two screws that hold in the fan (unplug the fan) at this point the cpu is exposed and you can see the the release bar that holds in the cpu, its a little trickery to lift it, theres a cross bar (part of the case) that you must get past in order to lift the cpu bar, remove all the screws that hold it down to get the most play in it you can then lift the cross bar and hold it while lifting the cpu release bar from under the cross bar, at this point the release bar is mostly lifted however to get it the rest of the way you will have to carefully cut a notch out, you will see where it needs cut with the bar lifted, so the cpu can be removed, (I used a razor knife) pull out the cpu carefully clean off the heat sync (alcohol will work) careful not to spill, then apply the thermal past, spread it install It; and put it all back together.

IT IS OF COURSE VERY IMPORTANT TO REMOVE ALL POWER FROM THE LAPTOP FIRST (BATTERY & CHARGER)

I would also like to upgrade my cpu, and have read the recommnedations on using the amd x2 5050e processor, but it says it is for a desktop, could some one point mt to the correct one, via link please.

I'm not hesitant, I would like to know this, because the one I found said it's for a desktop application, and i do not want to purchase the wrong one, and just wanted to make sure i was looking at the correct one...before i purchase

If your running XP u NEED to get the drivers from
the amd website or else it will run at 50-60 c it works fine
in win7 so be sure 2 get that or else it gets really warm

Actually the 5050e max temp is 78c(172f or so), it's fine at 108f to 112f that is well within operating temp! I put one in my Aspire5515 and ran 5 instances of Prime95 at the same time it never went above 58c!

Athlon X2's are known for running cool, but if you want it a bit lower try a beter thermocompound or lathing the heat sink. mine had a scratch or gouge on it, looked like it hapened at manufactur so i lathed it smooth with some wet fine grit sand paper and then polished it with a wet wool cloth!

And remember your vent and fan are pulling heat from your entire system, cpu, psu, hd, memory ect. ect., so its going to be hot comming out the vent! I would recomend you get speed fan its a heat sensor program it will display your core temp so you know exactly what it's at!

If you want it to perform even better, upgrade your HD to a 7,200rpm with a 16mb catch... it helps a lot!

I just loaded cpuid on mine and it has the cpu running at 69c and speed fan says its running at 48c? and im running Hellgate London at medium settings and also playing a HD movie! still running stable and mine has bin in for 3 months no so im thinkin that the cpuid is not reading the core temp right if it wher the cpu would have cooked by now!

I had an AMD 4850e avaliable to me, 2.5Ghz at 45w. The installation was simple, upgraded the RAM to 4Gb and this thing really flies. The problem is heat, at idle I'm sitting at 55c but with any kind of load it jumps to high 68c - 72c. I am concerned since my desk top runs no hotter than 40c under 100% load.(50c before a good cooler installation) I didn't get a reading from coretemp (stayed a 0c) with the stock 1.6Ghz CPU from Acer, so I don't know what it was running at. I don't run it for long for fear of damage, any feedback would be much appreciated.

20c-50c average temp

Did you apply Silver Thermal Compound on top of the processor? I use Antec Formula 5. I'm still running at 20-50c.

That TECHNICALLY, all the Athlon processors are meant for desktop use, but many have also been used in laptops. But I COULD be mistaken...
