No audio on laptop

Hi, this is my first time posting in request for technical help so please bear with me if I neglected to include any info.
Laptop: Asus Zenbook Ultra Slim Series
Model #: Ux31E
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel(R) Display Audio
Realtek High Definition Audio
I just received my laptop back a few weeks ago from Geeksquad for repairs (unrelated issue but I thought I'd put it down anyway). It was only a few days ago that the sound started disappearing. My built-in speakers didn't play anything, earphones were not being detected and the built-in microphone wasn't recording.
I would love to attribute this to software issues but I've blown my brains out trying out every solution I could get my hands on. I was wondering if anyone could just straight away tell me that this is a hardware issue and rip the band-aid off.
Here's what I've tried so far:
-checked if it was muted (sigh)
-checked if my speakers (the only device) were the default device (looked for disable and disconnected ones too)
-updated my audio drivers (for the 500th time)
-uninstalled and then reinstalled drivers (I even did the "delete this driver" method)
-checked if Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, Plug and Play and Multimedia Class Scheduler were started
-checked if I had the right permissions for "drivers32" in Registry Editor
-booted into safe mode; interestingly enough, Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder refused to start up here; it's my only lead
I'm just listing these from the top of my head. Either way, everything says it's working fine but none of the audio-related devices are working!!!
