Plugged in, not charging + other problems

Hi. I'm new here and this is also my first time posting in a forum about laptop problems. So I'm sorry in advance if I do / say something wrong.
I'm having problems with my Acer Aspire 4732Z. It's about 3-4 years old.
Here is what happened this week (I have no idea which of them are related to the problem so I'm writing all of them):
> Started using laptop on lap and pillows
> Installed Seagate external hard drive
> Blue screen appeared five times this week, with three in the same day
> Installed Windows Update the next day
> No more blue screens
> "Plugged in, not charging" started
> Windows slowed to a crawl
> Installed Microsoft Security Essentials
> Installed a temperature monitor -- 86 degrees
> After choosing "power saver", dimming the display, and moving to a cooler room -- 75 degrees
> Bought a cooling pad (with one big fan underneath) the next day -- 55 degrees
> Now it is running at about 55-65 degrees (idle). I have heard about overheating, is that possibly my laptop's problem? Or is this temperature normal?
> Windows is still a bit slow, but not as slow as the previous time. I would have wanted it to be as fast as last week, if possible.
> "Plugged in, not charging" problem persists. I'm getting worried about this.
> Startup also slow.
As much as possible I hope you can give solutions that do not require opening up my laptop. I am horrible at that and there is a good chance I will do more damage than repair to it. Although if it cannot be avoided please give suggestions.
I can give more details if needed. Thank you very much in advance!
