Toshiba Satellite L775-S7355 - keyboard problems

by nordicviking1 - 4/9/13 1:15 PM

Hardware and system software:
Part number PSK3SU-09903T.
Windows 8 Pro (running Windows update) - 64 bit.
The laptop was upgraded from 7 to 8 pro in the autumn. I completely reset Windows 8 in the beginning of March (unrelated software problem).

Problem:
The keyboard problems are intermittent.

About three months ago the keyboard started to send cursor "commands" to editors (Word, Outlook and webbased ones - like the one used for this forum). I type by looking at the keyboard and would occasional find paragraphs deleted and/or text that was mixed up, because the cursor had moved around the page and marked sections.

Could this instead be a touchpad issue?

Then about one month ago (unsure if this happened before or after the Windows 8 reset) the space tab started to only work intermittently. Though this happens much more often than the previous trouble. And lately maybe 5-8 times per one line in a Word document.

Toshiba Warranty Support
The laptop is under warranty till spring 2014. So I called Toshiba support and spent about three hours in order to get them to acknowledge (yes there is material for a rant) this is probably a hardware problem covered under warranty. In the process they did check that the PS/2 keyboard and Synaptics touchpad drivers are the current ones and working properly. And they reinstalled them to be certain. They were still working properly after the re-install.

BUT, I have to mail the laptop in and they take's 7-10 business days. So that's easily two weeks. And there is NO guarantee that any of my apps or data wil still be available. They might even install 7, which makes this option less desirable. Which may be what Toshiba hopes for.

I also inquired if they would mail me a keyboard. But no, they have to do the installation.

Questions and your recommendations:

My guess is that this is a keyboard hardware problem (I'll try using an external keyboard tomorrow) and the solution is to replace the keyboard myself.

Any recos on specific manufacturer? It looks the cheapest on Ebay is under $20.

Now, if I do replace the keyboard would that void the warranty for the rest of the laptop?

Your thoughts about the possible cause, troubleshooting, solutions or warranty would be much appreciated.

Thank you!!!
