Netbook suddenly fails to boot?

My old Acer Aspire One netbook has been bulletproof for several years, never giving me a moment's trouble (I was just bragging about it last week). This past weekend I went to turn it on and... nothing. I hear the fan come on, and I think the HD starts to spin up, but then after about 5 seconds it just stops, and nothing else happens. The screen never shows anything, but the power light will stay on. Any ideas what just went kaput? I really need to get back in there... due to a long, long run of poor judgement, this is the only computer that has all my iTunes on it! =0

1. Always try the GENERIC RESET given in the welcome post at the top of this forum.

2. So far, 100% of the time we can pull the HDD out of such machines to fish out the files the owner forgot to backup. I use a cable like this too often -> http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=2020
