Purple bar keeps appearing at bottom part of screen

My laptop HP dv6 6117-tx is about an year old. Somehow overnight my screen developed a bug. The bottom half is now purple/green (more like those inverted colors) but it is a bit transparent. I tried updating my graphic cards but it didnt work out.
How do I resolve this? The traditional restart didnt work as well.

If it is under a year old I'd contact HP and get it in for warranty. If it isn't under warranty find a competent puter shop and have them check it out, this doesn't sound like a simple fix although I have been fooled before. If it were a desktop it'd be a lot easier to deal with but laptops are another story, they are pretty tricky to deal with..

video problem

I will check it out with a computer shop, and yeah the laptop is just over a year old so no warranty. The warranty ran out a month ago. Now the bottom half is completely opaque. I just have to get by this week as I do important stuff on my laptop and have no desktop to fall back on in the meantime. A point to note is that i tried screenshots and the blacked out bottom part doesnt show. So does this mean that its some problem with the hardware display ?

Most likely it's a display problem. But that also means that connecting an external LCD screen (via the VGA or HDMi connection) would work OK. But it isn't very portable, alas.

If they have to send it to HP for repair, that could easily last a few weeks.

That is a photograph i took of the screen.. The bottom portion where its all dark is what is the issue. That portion is completely blacked out forcing me to be unable to use many programs although I can still browse (thankfully).
