E-machines Laptop. Use of battery or mains.

When using my laptop is it advisable to run it off battery regularly or the mains, or just keep the mains plugged in and remove the battery.
I'm sure this question has been asked before but I use my Laptop daily at home with easy access to a mains supply and have been running it with the mains plugged in. (Switching the mains off occasionally to let the battery be a battery). After less than a year I find the laptop is advising me to change my battery and the battery icon has a red cross through it, though it still charges. battery life is approx 2 hours. Thankyou.

The battery has finite life. On AC you don't use the battery so the battery is coasting along ready to take over if the power fails.

Thanks for your reply Bob, very helpful. I was pricing new batteries and they are far from cheap. Some companies offer chearer batteries but was warned they can fail after no time at all, poor quality!
