Qosmio X505-Q898 - GeForce GTX 460M video card

My Qosmio X505-Q898, with Nvidia GTX 460M video card, booted to a blank screen. I reinstalled the video drive to no avail. I hooked up a flat screen monitor to the VGA port. Video is displayed on the secondary monitor. I installed several different Nvidia drivers. None of the drivers worked, the laptop monitor is still blank.
After messing around all day yesterday, I found a strange fix, but am not happy with it.
I un-installed the Nvidia video card driver. I shut the laptop down. I unplugged it from main power and booted it up on battery power. I installed the latest Nvidia driver for the GeForce GTX 460M. After re-start, as soon as the log on screen appears, the laptop monitor comes on. I plugged in the power cord again and the monitor stays on.
If I leave the power plug attached and install the driver, the laptop monitor will not come on. It will only come on after installing the drive under battery power.
So, I have the laptop screen working again, but, if I turn off the laptop or re-start the laptop, the laptop monitor blanks out again. I have to perform the steps, above, again.
Has anyone heard of a problem like this? Anyone know a possible fix? This is crazy!
Thanks!
